Drawing & Painting: Surrealist Painting in Perspective

After learning about the sensibilities of surrealism and drawing in perspective, students were asked to pull from their own dreams or life experiences to create a surrealist painting.

Design: Quote Poster

Students began their next project by studying typography and how to create typefaces that communicate effectively. Following that, they chose a favorite quote to represent in a poster.

Studio 1: Mandala Collaborative Print

To kick off the second semester, the Studio 1 class started a printmaking unit. What was intended to be a warm-up project turned into an incredibly beautiful collaboration!

Each student was given a linoleum block with a pre-made (by the teacher!) design. They were told to leave the black design and fill in the areas around it with patterns and designs. At least 50% of the block needed to be influenced by Indian patterns and designs.
Once each student finished carving and printing, we put the puzzle pieces together and formed a beautiful mandala, a Sanskrit word meaning "circle."

Because the collaborative prints were so successful, we decided to auction them off for charity. We made four large prints to sell and raised about $300 (USD).

Art 9: Still-Life

All of ninth grade began second semester with art. First, they studied basic observation drawing with specific attention to proportion and foreshortening. Art 9 completed the unit with a still-life project, to which they added their own creative flare.
